The May 8 meeting of the Alameda Beekeepers Association drew a large crowd, including some new people. Lots of us had lots of questions, and it was fun to get some answers and hear from the experts among us.
Jose Vargas, a serious home beekeeper -- with seven hives in his Oakland yard -- brought in a solar wax melter he constructed. Improving on plans he'd found, this is his second-generation design. Built of plywood with a heavy glass top, Jose says it gets to almost 250 degrees and melts all the wax in a couple of hours.
Jose is interested in building some of these for other people, so if you're interested, you can email him. The address is Vargas5000 at netzero.net.
Another guest at the meeting was a guy from Bay Area Alternative Press. (Sorry, I didn't get his name.) This press, located in Berkeley, serves independent media. Bay Area Alternative Press will train anyone to organize, print, design and write in order to spread the word about social and economic justice. The press is going to help our association design and print flyers publicizing our presence at the Alameda County Fair.
The next Alameda County Beekeepers Assoc. meeting will be held at the fairgrounds on June 12. Watch this space for more information.
